Guitar Lessons With Andy

Hi there,

I’ll give a little info about my teaching approach and my experience. If you’d like to contact me for lessons you may contact me on 07508852179.

My Approach:

Personally I most enjoy music when creativity is involved, i.e. not just playing written music. I therefore take this approach to my teaching, using games and encouraging improvisation and writing.

I adapt to the students wants, passions, and abilities. This might mean for one student we focus a lot on developing reading skills, but most students prefer to dig into their favourite artists and play by developing their ear/listening skills.

I do not offer exam preparation, and again, having started my music journey with exams it put me off music and didn’t develop any sort of creativity or passion. I therefore prefer to allow lessons to adapt to the unique styles and interests of each student, away from the narrow lane of grade preparation. What grade guitar was Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page or Peter Green? Answer: no grades whatsoever.

My Experience:

I started playing guitar in my bedroom one summer holiday at age 14 and was hooked, I spent the summer learning from a few beginner books. I studied at the London Centre of Contemporary Music to complete a Bmus in performance and production in 2009, specialising in Music for Film. I went onto to work creating music for various short films, performing in bands and as a solo artist. I then completed an MA in Music and Sonic Media at the University of Sussex in 2019.

I have taught guitar and piano for the past twenty years, to a variety of levels, ages and styles.

My personal music is broadly in the ‘singer/songwriter’ category, various favourite artists - Lizzy Mcalpine, Joni Mitchell, Santana, Dire Straits, Clairo…
