My Approach: Personally I most enjoy music when creativity is involved, i.e. not just playing written music. I therefore take this approach to my teaching, using games and encouraging improvisation and writing. I adapt to the students wants, passions, and abilities. This might mean for one student we focus a lot on developing reading skills, but most students prefer to dig into their favourite artists and play by developing their ear/listening skills. I do not offer exam preparation, and again, having started my music journey with exams it put me off music and didn’t develop any sort of creativity or passion. I therefore prefer to allow lessons to adapt to the unique styles and interests of each student, away from the narrow lane of grade preparation.
